- A native herbaceous perennial, several species can be found in the NC, with 2 found more commonly in the piedmont: Hollow-stem Joe-Pye-weed (Eupatorium fistulosum), Purple-node Joe-Pye-weed (E. purpureum). An erect and clump-forming plant that can grow 3-8 feet tall.
- Leaves
- Leaves in whorls of lance-shaped dark green leaves are up to 10 inches long and 3 inches across with prominent venation, toothed/serrated margins.
- Flowers
- Purple or pink flowers have a vanilla scent and occur in rounded clusters of 5 to 7 florets per head that are up to 12-18 inches across. Flowers are attractive to various pollinators, especially honey bees.
